The Scapular of Saint Joseph is a Roman Catholic devotional scapular that traces its roots to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in St. Claude in France and was initially in white. It was later approved for the Diocese of Verona by the Congregation of Rites in 1880. On 15 April, 1898, Pope Leo XIII granted the Capuchins the right of blessing and investing this scapular.
Due to the multiple sources for the scapular, the colors may be in combination, having white, gold and purple. The front of the scapular depicts Saint Joseph carrying the infant Jesus, and a lily in the other hand.
There is a plenary indulgence for those who confess, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Church on the following feast days: the day of investment of the scapular, 25 December , 1 January, 6 January, 2 February, 19 March, 25 March, Easter, Feast of the Ascension, 15 August, 8 September, 8 December, 3rd Sunday after Easter and at the time of death. It is recommended also to say 5 Our Fathers, 5 Hail Marys and 5 Glorias before the Blessed Sacrament at these times.
In this form, the two segments of woollen cloth are of a violet colour; to these are sewed two pieces of gold-coloured material (linen, cotton, etc.) of equal size. On the gold-coloured segment before the breast is the representation of St. Joseph with the Child Jesus on his arm and the staff of lilies in his other hand.
The bands are white. This scapular is to remind us of the virtues of St Joseph which are humility, modesty and purity; to remind us to pray to St Joseph, asking him to pray particularly for the Church; and to grant us a happy death.
Prayer of the Pope Leo XIII in his 1889 encyclical, Quamquam pluries. The prayer is enriched with a partial indulgence (Handbook of Indulgences, conc. 19). For tribulation Times.
Prayer
To you, O blessed Joseph,
do we come in our tribulation,
and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse,
we confidently invoke your patronage also.
Through that charity which bound you
to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God
and through the paternal love
with which you embraced the Child Jesus,
we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance
which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood,
and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.
O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family,
defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ;
O most loving father, ward off from us
every contagion of error and corrupting influence;
O our most mighty protector, be kind to us
and from heaven assist us in our struggle
with the power of darkness.
As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril,
so now protect God’s Holy Church
from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity;
shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection,
so that, supported by your example and your aid,
we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness,
and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven.
Amen.

Chaplet TO ST. JOSEPH
+ The sign of the Cross.
+ In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Prayer: Oh St. Joseph, that with love you worked the wood in this life, fleeting life, to provide the daily bread to your family; Oh St. Joseph, now in heaven with Christ, who had to be extended on the wood to give man eternal life, teach us to recognize in the every day task the way towards God.
1– For all the time that you waited for Mary, give us the virtue to silently and patiently wait, i.e. give us peace.
Our Father, five Hail Maries, Glory, and prayer.
Beloved St. Joseph, cause my faith to grow, so in it I will search for hope and charity.
2– By accepting in abstention Mary to marry, give us the virtue to live in purity and abstention.
3– By accepting the paternity of Jesus, give us the virtue to only make the will of God.
4– For the day that you left everything to save your Son, give us the virtue to fulfill what God requests and to live, like You, in holy obedience.
5– For the day that you found your Son speaking with wisdom and kept quiet, give us the virtue to keep quiet and to listen to that who speaks in the name of God.
Prayer: You, St. Joseph, patron of families, protector of the Church, defender of children and faithful guardian of the mothers, help us to receive the grace and thus reach the glorious virtues of your heart in the abstention, in the prudence, justice and humility. Amen.
To conclude: Prayer for the Holy Father so that he leads us to the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus:
Our Father, three Hail Maries, and Glory.
+ The sign of the Cross. Amen
